Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

2023 Chancellor's Challenge 5 km Run/Walk

Record-setting third-annual Chancellor’s Challenge raises a total of $111,990

Ontario Tech University Chancellor Mitch Frazer (centre) and participants get ready to begin the third annual Chancellor’s Challenge 5 km Run/Walk at Polonsky Commons (September 23, 2023).

As a champion of Ontario Tech University students and of technological and social innovation in education, in 2021 Chancellor Mitch Frazer challenged the campus to raise funds in support of student success. Mr. Frazer’s annual Chancellor’s Challenge has quickly become a favourite experience among students, faculty, staff, alumni and the external community.

At this year’s third-annual event on September 23, more than 340 people participated in the Chancellor’s Challenge 5 km Run/Walk, presented by Mintz, and crossed the finish line together, united in the same goal, to raise funds for the greatest needs of students, including scholarships and bursaries. Prior to event day, the total funds raised had already exceeded this year’s $100,000 goal and registrations increased by more than two-fold over 2022.

Chancellor’s Challenge participants ran, walked and rolled along a scenic 5-kilometre route looping the university’s north Oshawa campus location, starting and ending at Polonsky Commons. After the Challenge, attendees enjoyed a variety of outdoor games, interactive and engaging activities, BBQ lunch, live music and tours of the Automotive Centre of Excellence Core Research Facility.

Ontario Tech President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Steven Murphy addressed the crowd, thanking Chancellor Frazer for his dedication and commitment as the ‘Students’ Chancellor’ and for his philanthropic leadership. Chancellor Frazer, alongside his family, also received recognition for their recent historic $3 million gift agreement in support of the Mitch and Leslie Frazer Faculty of Education.

The fourth-annual Chancellor’s Challenge 5 km Run/Walk is tentatively set for Saturday, September 21, 2024. Join us next September, and together we can help Ontario Tech students realize the promise of a limitless future.

“I’m very grateful to everyone who donated, fundraised and participated in this year’s Chancellor’s Challenge. Each year, I am inspired by the enthusiasm and support for this fantastic event. The contributions of our donors, participants and sponsors directly impact student initiatives at Ontario Tech, helping to ensure students have the support needed to realize their academic goals. I hope you will join me and accept the 2024 Chancellor’s Challenge to help make it the best one yet!”
-Mitch Frazer, Chancellor, Ontario Tech University

“The future is bright for students at Ontario Tech. I want to thank everyone who ‘went the extra mile’, and for the incredible fundraising efforts that have taken place in support of the Chancellor’s Challenge and, ultimately, our students. I can’t wait to see what we can achieve together with next year’s event.
-Dr. Steven Murphy, President and Vice-Chancellor, Ontario Tech University
