This course is a prerequisite for teaching mathematics in the Intermediate division and serves a diverse group of previously qualified teachers.

You must have a background in this subject matter and be a teacher who is:

  • Interested in engaging in ongoing professional learning.
  • Making divisional changes.
  • New to the Ontario school system.
  • Planning to move into administrative positions.

A teacher's ability to ensure positive learning experiences for students is critical to the delivery of intermediate division subjects. Teachers are skilled at combining their knowledge of adolescent development and learning with their understanding of subject matter to facilitate active student engagement.

This course focuses on the discipline and theory underpinning the study of the particular subject. You will explore:

  • Program planning and delivery issues.
  • The development of adolescents.
  • The elementary and secondary school environments.
  • Other issues related to teaching and learning in grades 7 to 10.

At least one-half of the course concentrates on subject-specific curriculum.

Location: Education Building, 11 Simcoe Street North (downtown Oshawa – King and Simcoe streets)

  • You must apply and pay the course tuition through our online application for Mathematics Intermediate prior to writing the pre-test. The test fee is not included in your application.
  • Test fee: $50 debit/credit only. Payment is made on site at the time of the test.
  • Tests are scheduled in correspondence with a specific session. For example, if you are applying for the Spring Mathematics course, you must take the Spring pre-test.

  • A photocopy of your current OCT Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification. A letter of eligibility doesn't satisfy this admission requirement.
  • Official transcript(s) showing proof of successful completion of a minimum of two full university degree credit courses. This transcript is required only if you are requesting exemption from the pre-test.
  • Candidates who do not have the equivalent of two full university degree credit courses in Mathematics must write the Mathematics Pre-Admission Test. There are no exceptions.
  • If requesting exemption, all necessary supporting documentation must be submitted to the AQ office prior to the pre-test date.

Please note:

  • Admission offers from other institutions are not considered for exemptions. 
  • If you have successfully completed a pre-admission test in Mathematics at Ontario Tech University within the last three years, you are not required to retake the test.
  • Proficiency testing results from other institutions are not considered for exemptions.
  • You are not exempt unless you have been explicitly informed by Ontario Tech University.
