Typically we start a convocation ceremony with a land acknowledgement of the traditional territory in which we are gathering and an Indigenous honour song and smudging ceremony. Our university campus is situated on the Traditional Territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishnaabeg Nation, which includes Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. We encourage everyone to take a moment to acknowledge that the land they are on is the traditional territory of many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Metis people. As a university community, we are dedicated to continue to increase our awareness, understanding and gratitude for the lands we share.
We look forward to our in-person convocation ceremony where we will begin with a traditional honour song and smudging ceremony to bring positive energy and start things off in a good way.
