Information regarding recent mumps outbreak

Media outlets have recently reported on the increase in mumps outbreak cases in Ontario. While the number of reported mumps cases in Durham Region is low, Toronto has a number of confirmed cases.

Mumps is a disease caused by a virus; it begins as an infection of the nose and throat but may spread through the blood to many parts of the body.

Signs and symptoms include:

  • facial swelling
  • fever
  • swelling and tenderness of one or more salivary glands

Persons with mumps need to be isolated for nine days. If you suspect you have had contact with or are experiencing symptoms of mumps, stay at home and contact your doctor or the Durham Region Health Department (DRHD) at 905.668.7711 or 1.800.841.2729.
