The Bachelor of Arts in Educational Studies is leading-edge, hybrid program, with an opportunity to specialize in Digital Technologies, Early Childhood Studies, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, or Lifelong Learning with Technology. We also offer a fully-online advanced entry program designed for students who have completed a two-year Ontario college diploma or equivalent. Our online format uses virtual classrooms to maximize interaction, collaboration, community building and problem-solving.
Our unique 16-month program structure—and emphasis on technology in learning and teaching—defines our Bachelor of Education program. From our forward-thinking curriculum, respected and award-winning instructors, immersive field experiences (practicum), emphasis on equity, diversity and inclusion, and evidence-based practices, you’ll build a strong and well-rounded foundation to start a meaningful career on the front lines of modern education.
I honestly didn’t expect to be fortunate enough to have a full-time, long-term, occasional teaching position so quickly after graduating from Ontario Tech! Bachelor of Education (BEd) - Primary/Junior
Our BEd program - Primary/Junior is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to become an effective 21st-century educator.
The emphasis on technology in learning and teaching is a defining element of our BEd program. As a teacher candidate, you will become familiar with the basic skills of teaching, while at the same time focusing on how students learn in a digital age.
This 16-month program prepares you to be an elementary school teacher (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6) with strengths in science, mathematics, literacy and technology. You will graduate and enter the workforce a full-term sooner than most other BEd programs.Learn more:
Bachelor of Education (BEd) - Intermediate/Senior
Our BEd program - Intermediate/Senior is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to become an effective 21st-century educator.
The emphasis on technology in learning and teaching is a defining element of our BEd program. As a teacher candidate, you will become familiar with the basic skills of teaching, while at the same time focusing on how students learn in a digital age.This 16-month program prepares you to teach grades 7 to 12 with expertise in two of the following teachable subject areas:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- English
- General Science (any combination of biology, chemistry, environmental science and physics courses qualify for this teachable)
- Health and Physical Education (kinesiology courses qualify for this teachable)
- History
- Mathematics
- Physics

Concurrent Education
With your acceptance into this program, a spot will be reserved for you in our Bachelor of Education (BEd) program, which you will begin following the completion of your undergraduate degree. This means that, provided you maintain requisite grades in your undergraduate studies, you'll be granted direct entry into our 16-month BEd program, where you'll complete the studies required to teach at the elementary and/or secondary school levels in Ontario.
There are two options to apply to the Concurrent program.
Apply directly to the undergraduate program of your choice on the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) website and select the Concurrent option.If you are a current Ontario Tech undergraduate student apply during your second or third year of study.
Students admitted to the Concurrent program must meet the GPA and subject specialization requirements to proceed to the Bachelor of Education program after completing their undergraduate degree.
The Primary/Junior Concurrent Education program is available for undergraduate students in any faculty.
The Intermediate/Senior Concurrent Education program is available for undergraduate students in the following faculties:
- Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science
- Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences
- Faculty of Health Sciences (excluding the Nursing program)
- Faculty of Science

Our Educational Studies program recognizes the growing importance and the current trends in formal and informal lifelong learning as professional development needs to expand across academic, corporate, non-profit and volunteer sectors. Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) is a specialization within the Educational Studies program. In this specialization, you will develop both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to recognize systemic, historic and attitudinal barriers that contribute to discrimination and oppression in both workplace learning and classroom settings.

Experiential learning
Our Practicum program in the Bachelor of Education program allows teacher candidates to learn and grow as teachers through experiencing the day-to-day activities and realities of teaching in school settings. As a teacher candidate, you'll participate in periods of observation and interaction where you'll apply knowledge through lesson planning, gathering resources, taking risks, networking, and building overall confidence as a professional teacher. Through a minimum of 80 days and three different school boards/communities, teacher candidates will have the opportunity to experience what it's really like to be a teacher. Use your field placements to:
- Network and build relationships with schools, and the community.
- Network with people outside of your supervisor—the Principal and Vice-Principal, the librarian, the special education teacher, and the custodial and secretarial staff.
- Learn from your experience and discover how a teaching career is right for you.
- Put your new skills and knowledge into practice through active experimentation.
As a student within our faculty, you'll take your educational experience to the next level. From practicums and field placements, and everything in between, you can feel confident that you are entering the workforce career-ready.
