Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Cleaning and disinfection FAQ

Cleaning Protocols

  • What disinfectants are acceptable?

    Use only disinfectants that have a Drug Identification Number (DIN). Visit the Government of Canada’s website for more information.

    A DIN is an eight-digit number given by Health Canada that confirms it’s approved for use in Canada. Check Health Canada’s product database for acceptable DIN numbers.

  • How do I use a disinfectant?

    Where possible, use a pre-mixed solution.

    Read and follow manufacturer’s instructions to:

    • Properly prepare a solution.
    • Allow adequate contact time for the disinfectant to kill germs (see product label).
    • Wear gloves when handling cleaning products including wipes.
    • Wear any other personal protective equipment recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Is the university increasing the frequency of its cleaning?

    Our cleaning staff have increased the frequency of cleaning of high touch-points areas such as:

    • door handles
    • elevator buttons
    • handrails
    • public counters

    Additional cleaning measures include:

    • Disposing garbage from common areas in centralized bins.
    • Wiping down photocopiers and printers in common areas, twice per day.
    • Vacuuming carpet and soft seating once per month.
    • Dusting individual offices, desks, windowsills, shelving, cabinets and office equipment once per month.
    • Mopping floors, once per month (unless a Health and Safety issue, such as a large spill occurs).
    • Wiping down high-touch areas in kitchenettes twice per day. This includes:
    • counters
    • cupboard handles
    • refrigerator door handles
    • sinks

     

    Cleaning staff will clean offices, workspaces, including surfaces and equipment, however, we ask employees to further support these efforts and clean these areas as well.
