AI Forum
Held on Friday, March 27 at Ontario Tech University, the inaugural AI Forum brought together more than 200 leaders from academia, industry, government and the next generation of skilled workers. The forum showcased the university’s leadership in advancing human-centred artificial intelligence, convening experts in AI, energy and education to explore applications that strengthen communities, support economic growth and empower people.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is advancing faster than any technology in human history. It is reshaping how we teach, learn and work. Canadians face a critical opportunity to harness its potential while upholding trust that underpins strong economies and strong societies. Canada’s legacy of ethical leadership positions us to champion AI that is both innovative and responsible. By embracing an ethics-by-design approach, businesses can build AI systems that enhance human potential rather than undermine it. Trust becomes a strategic advantage when companies balance ambition with accountability, adopting critical guardrails and governance.

Keynote presentation by Dr. Hossein Rahnama
Perspective-Aware AI and the Rise of Human-AI Agents

Dr. Hossein Rahnama
Edward Rogers Sr. Chair in Artificial Intelligence and Human Creativity, TMU Founder and CEO, Flybits; Visiting Professor and Head of the sAIpien Program, MIT Media Lab; Co-Founder Digital Media Zone
Dr. Rahnama’s keynote underscored a paradigm shift in artificial intelligence through the emergence of Perspective-Aware AI (PAI) and Human-AI agents. By embedding diverse human perspectives into intelligent systems, these advancements enable a new model of collaboration—one that augments human capability rather than replaces it. Central to this vision is Chronicles, a breakthrough approach that combines human expertise with AI to create reasoning-ready digital models.
The keynote outlined a future where Human-AI agents expand how people learn, work and collaborate, with transformative implications across sectors including cities, finance, robotics and healthcare.
Dr. Hossein Rahnama is an internationally recognized computer scientist whose work focuses on artificial intelligence, data governance and the transparent design of data-driven systems. He is a founding faculty member of the Scalable AI Program for the Intelligent Evolution of Networks (sAIpien), an initiative at the MIT Media Lab that develops auditable human-AI systems that provide organizations with the evidence they need to trace, test and explain AI-supported decisions. Dr. Rahnama is also the founder and CEO of Flybits, which helps institutions deliver personalized digital experiences built on responsible data practices. He has authored more than 30 publications and patents, and his research continues to influence how organizations design and govern AI in complex environments.

Keynote presentation by Dr. Peter Lewis
Building Trust, Accountability and Responsible Innovation

Dr. Peter Lewis
Canada Research Chair in Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence; Director, Mindful AI Research Institute (MAIRI); Associate Professor, Ontario Tech University.
Do you trust AI? For what, and why? In this keynote, Dr. Lewis examined how current conversations about AI often rely on incomplete frameworks for understanding trust. He explored different approaches to thinking about trust in AI, highlighting what these perspectives reveal and how they can inform the design of systems grounded in a human-centred, empowering view of trust.
Dr. Peter Lewis is an interdisciplinary leader whose work sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence and society. As a Canada Research Chair in Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence, he designs and analyzes socially intelligent AI systems that support responsible decision-making in real-world contexts.
Dr. Lewis has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and co-edited the book Self-Aware Computing Systems. He has partnered with more than 75 organizations across Europe and Canada, primarily small and medium-sized enterprises, alongside larger corporations and non-profits on applied AI adoption projects. Previously, he directed Think Beyond Data, an economic development program that generated more than £4 million for the regional economy. His work addresses trust, justice and accessibility in AI, guiding the alignment of emerging technologies with societal norms and values.
As Canada’s AI agenda continues to evolve, universities have an important role to play in advancing these conversations. This forum marked the first of many critically important generational conversations that will shape our society, economy and world.
