AI learning agent

The AI Learning Agent

The AI Learning Agent is our in-house, human-centred learning system built to strengthen learning while protecting academic integrity. Developed and piloted across multiple programs, it demonstrates how AI systems designed with clear safeguards, oversight and academic integrity can enhance teaching and support students.

A course-based learning system

The AI Learning Agent is embedded within participating courses and draws exclusively from instructor-approved materials.

It is designed to:

  • Align with course learning outcomes.
  • Operate within the university’s secure, privacy-protected digital environment.
  • Strengthen critical thinking by guiding reasoning, not generating answers.

This is not a public chatbot. The AI Learning Agent is a structured academic support system created specifically for higher education with guardrails in place from the start.

Strengthening learning beyond the classroom

Available outside scheduled class time, the AI Learning Agent helps students when they need it and wherever they are.

Students use the system to:

  • Clarify key concepts using approved course content.
  • Prepare for discussions and assessments with greater confidence.
  • Work through problems using guided prompts.

The system complements faculty-led teaching while preserving academic standards.

Student-informed development

Students actively shape the technology through real-time feedback.

The pilot includes undergraduate and graduate courses across all faculties. Student input informs:

  • Ongoing system refinements.
  • Governance and oversight decisions.
  • Future expansion and implementation.

By participating directly, students gain direct insight into how AI systems are developed, constrained and overseen, building digital literacy and trust into the experience.

Privacy, integrity and oversight

Trust is embedded from the outset.

The AI Learning Agent:

  • Operates within the university’s secure infrastructure.
  • Does not use student interactions to train external AI models.
  • Maintains full faculty oversight and control.
  • Includes safeguards to reduce bias and prevent misuse.

Human oversight remains central at every stage.
