Mr. Stephen Poloz

For his exemplary record of leadership and commitment to Canada’s economic prosperity, and qualities of strength and accountability that align with Ontario Tech’s values of integrity, respect, and honesty, the university proudly confers upon Mr. Stephen Poloz the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws.  

Born in Oshawa, Mr. Poloz is a distinguished economist with nearly 40 years of experience in financial markets, economic forecasting, and policy. He served as the ninth Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2013 to 2020, where he also chaired the Bank’s Board. Additionally, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Bank for International Settlements and the Consultative Council for the Americas.

He first joined the Bank of Canada in 1981, where he held various senior roles over 14 years, ultimately becoming Chief of the Research Department. In 1995, he transitioned to BCA Research, before joining Export Development Canada, where he advanced to Senior Vice-President of Financing, and eventually served as President and CEO.   

After retiring in 2020, Mr. Poloz joined the boards of Enbridge and CGI Inc. and became special adviser at the Toronto-based law firm Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt. He is an Honorary Certified International Trade Professional and completed the Senior Executive Program at Columbia University. Additionally, he has served as a visiting scholar at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C., and at the Economic Planning Agency in Tokyo, Japan. 

Mr. Poloz holds a PhD and master’s degree in economics from Western University, a bachelor’s degree in economics from Queen’s University, and two honorary degrees. He has taught economics at Western, Concordia and Queen’s.

Currently, Mr. Poloz is Chair of the Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management, and is a former President of the Ottawa Economics Association. In recognition of his contributions, he was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2024. He and his wife Valerie are longstanding philanthropic supporters of United Way Ottawa, demonstrating their commitment to community development and social impact.
