Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Class of 2023, congratulations on achieving this special milestone today! We are honoured to celebrate with you as you join our Ontario Tech alumni community and prepare for the next chapters of your journey.

The skills and knowledge you have acquired at Ontario Tech will serve you well in the future, whether in your professional life, your continued academic studies, or in the volunteer activities you engage in that make a positive impact on your community.

We are honoured to celebrate with you as you join our Ontario Tech Alumni community.

Savour the moment as you cross the Convocation stage. The degree you now hold recognizes and serves as a reward for all of your hard work, discipline, and commitment to your studies. Your degree also signals that you are prepared to lead and solve pressing problems through your proven capacity to develop and activate brilliant and creative ideas.

One of the things I’m most excited about, and that I believe truly makes Ontario Tech a top destination for students, is our focus on the ethical application of technology to build better communities and protect our planet. As a university we’ve made it our priority to ensure ‘tech with a conscience’ is woven into our teaching and learning practices, granting our students opportunities to participate in exciting projects, many of which are firsts of their kind.

Whether it’s getting involved in the development of Canada’s first electric vehicle, participating in hackathons to tackle nationwide challenges such as food insecurity, or incorporating virtual reality technology into surgical simulation and training, Ontario Tech students stand out among the rest for their academic knowledge, the hands-on experiences they’ve gained, and the accessible, impactful solutions they develop to make our world a better place. Having been immersed in Ontario Tech’s culture of entrepreneurship and social innovation throughout their academic journey, our graduates emerge from the university ready to achieve great things.

On behalf of our entire university community, congratulations again on a job well done, and best wishes for continued success.

Sincerely,
Dr. Steven Murphy
