Mr. Ralph Lean

Ralph LeanIn recognition of his decades of distinguished service to Canada’s legal, corporate and educational communities, and his strategic counsel, civic leadership and dedication to fostering the next generation of leaders, the university proudly confers upon Mr. Ralph Lean the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws.

Mr. Lean is a highly respected lawyer, business leader and philanthropist whose decades of service have earned him national recognition. Since 2011, he has been a distinguished Counsel in Residence at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Toronto Metropolitan University. He serves on the boards of many Canadian public and private companies, and has devoted significant energy to charities, foundations and civic groups. He is the Founding Chair of the Canadian Advisory Board of Right to Play, and serves on the boards of Giants of Africa and the PS43 Foundation. He previously served on the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board and was a board member of the World Film Festival of Toronto for more than 20 years.

As a Senior Legal Advisor to some of Canada’s most prominent corporations and organizations, Mr. Lean has been instrumental in shaping governance, driving strategic growth and navigating complex negotiations. Through his work with students and emerging leaders, he has helped bridge the gap between education and professional success, empowering them to make meaningful contributions to society. While his influence extends across the country, he has also made notable contributions in Ontario. His ability to connect regional opportunities with national networks has helped strengthen economic and community development in Durham Region, and beyond.

Mr. Lean is a strong advocate for recognizing intimate partner violence as an epidemic in Ontario and addressing it through a public health lens—one that sees it as systemic, societal and preventable. He’s also championed initiatives focused on corporate social responsibility, including efforts to increase the representation of women on public-company boards.

From his prominent legal career, dedication to public service and unwavering support for education, Mr. Lean exemplifies leadership grounded in integrity, vision and purpose. He champions inclusiveness and representation, supporting pathways for individuals of diverse backgrounds to access mentorship, education and professional development.

In 2013, Mr. Lean was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. He is the retired honorary counsel to the Kingdom of Morocco and holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from the Western Business School, an ICD.D Corporate Director designation, and an honorary Doctor of Laws from Toronto Metropolitan University.
