Welcome to Ontario Tech University!

I’m immensely proud to lead the Ontario Tech family. We’re a modern, forward-thinking and tech-savvy university with bold plans to create a better Canada and a better world. We look at technology differently, whether it’s developing new tech breakthroughs or investigating how tech influences our lives. We also prioritize the delivery of flexible, dynamic and learner-centred education that prepares our students to become tomorrow’s change-makers and provides opportunities for the Canadian workforce to reskill and upskill. All of this is driven by our commitment to social, scientific and economic innovations through the lenses of equity, diversity and inclusion.

While Ontario Tech is one of Canada’s youngest post-secondary institutions, in only two decades we’ve risen impressively in the rankings for our research portfolio. Our research community is busy launching impressive new collaborative research projects across all of our faculties, and forging partnerships with industry and government to develop knowledge and solutions to address the most pressing needs in our society. We’re a national leader in clean energy and environmental sustainability research, and through our Brilliant Energy Institute, we partner with community and provincial organizations to inform and mobilize Canada’s transition to net-zero carbon emissions.

I’m incredibly proud of our emphasis on supporting our students’ academic aspirations, as well as supporting the physical and mental wellness of our entire campus community. Student Mental Health Services offers a Stepped Care approach to helping our students navigate life challenges. This service-delivery model reduces wait times and provides a more customized approach to care by matching students with varying levels of support appropriate to their needs.

Ontario Tech is a vibrant home to people of many different backgrounds, cultures and identities. We aim to be a place where every person belongs and is free to grow their skillsets and mindsets. By signing the Dimensions charter, we’ve proudly joined other universities across Canada in a commitment to drive initiatives that prioritize reconciliation, remove systemic barriers, and enable all faculty, staff and students, of all identities, to thrive in an equitable, diverse and inclusive environment.

We also focus on collaboration, and experiential and co-operative learning as keys to student success. As we undergo an exciting new period of student growth and program development, I can’t wait to see what new ideas and possibilities will emerge from these advancements.

We’re experiencing renewed energy, excitement, connectedness, and Ridgeback spirit. Sports and recreation play a huge role in enhancing the on-campus university experience and reinforcing a sense of pride and belonging within our tight-knit, caring community. I hope you’ll join me in cheering on our incredibly talented varsity athletes as they reach new levels of performance and success. To make the most of your university experience, I also encourage students to get involved in one or more of our student-run clubs and societies, where they can explore their interests, make lifelong connections and contribute to their community.

Ontario Tech is the place to be. We’re confident in who we are, and where we are headed. I invite you to connect with us and discover your place in our Ridgebacks family.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Murphy
President and Vice-Chancellor
