This course, offered in partnership with Durham First Aid, offers basic first aid and safety skills for youth ages 9 to 13 years old. Participants learn about being safe when they are without the direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or trusted adult, both at home and in their communities. Participants receive a workbook which they will use throughout the duration of the course and keep at the conclusion of the course.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a Certification in class, and a digital Red Cross certification will be emailed to their caregiver/parent/guardian.

*Due to the nature of the course activities, opting in to the Durham First Aid Release and Waiver during registration is mandatory. Questions specifically about the Durham First Aid Release and Waiver can be directed to info@durhamfirstaid.com for response by a Durham First Aid representative.

8:15 a.m. Drop-off. University staff will greet participants and their parents/guardians at a designated area in Shawenjigewining Hall.
8:30 a.m. to 12 noon Course instruction
Lunch break

12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Course instruction
2:30 p.m. Pick-up. University staff will greet parents/guardians at a designated area in Shawenjigewining Hall for pick-up.
*Schedule may change without notice. Breaks and lunch times vary and are determined at the discretion of the instructor. Before/after care is not available.
  • The importance of responsibility and respect while being accountable for yourself
  • The importance of setting and following safety rules when on your own
  • How to stay safe at home and within the community
  • How to prepare for, recognize and respond to unexpected situations (e.g., inclement weather, strangers, and unanticipated visits)
  • Basic first aid skills
  1. Attendance: Learners must attend and participate in 100% of the course – this includes active, directed contributions at all scheduled sessions.
  2. Personal Care Skills: Learners must be able to comprehend and demonstrate the critical personal care skills.
  3. First Aid Skills: Learners must be able to comprehend and demonstrate the critical first aid skills.
  4. Behavior: Learners must be able to exhibit the behaviors expected of a learner in this course.
