Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I get my campus ID card?
You can obtain your campus ID card in the Campus ID office located in the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre, first floor, Room G1004. The hours of operation fluctuate during the course of the academic year please visit the Campus ID webpage to obtain all ID details including the hours of operation and locations.

What if my Campus ID card is lost or stolen?
Check with the Lost and Found first. If you have a Meal Plan or Flex dollar account, visit the nearest Aramark office to suspend your account until you either find or replace your card.

Reprint fees:

  • Campus identification card: $10;
  • Continuous Learning identification card: $10;
  • Non post-secondary program identification card: $10;
  • Clinical or student employment badges: $2; and
  • Proximity identification card: $25.

 

What happens if I change programs or status? (full-time/part-time)
Present your current ID card and your new timetable to the staff in either of the ID offices for a free replacement.

What is the advantage of depositing money onto the Smart Card chip?
You will be able to photo copy without carrying a pocket full of change.

If I lose my card, do I lose the balance on the Smart Chip for the photo copy meters?
Yes. We recommend to limiting your deposit to $5 at a time.

If my card needs to be reprinted, will the balance on the Smart Chip be transferred to the new card?
Yes, as long as the chip can be read. The full card must be intact in order to do this.

What are Smart/Proximity Access Cards?
These are campus identification cards and controlled access cards all in one. Arrangements required for this type of card must be made by an authorized staff member.

How should I take care of my card?
Treat your Campus ID like a credit or debit card. Store it safely in your wallet. Don’t punch holes in it, or bend it. Bent or warped cards may jam in the Cash Manager Machines or photocopy meters.

In addition, don’t apply stickers anywhere on your card. The magnetic stripe on your card must be kept clean to access, cash registers and swipe access readers.

The heat of clothing dryers will also damage your card. You are responsible for the replacement charge of damaged, or worn out, lost or stolen cards.

If a security officer or a campus official asks to see my campus ID card am I obliged to show it?
Yes. Anyone using UOIT facilities or on campus property is required by the Students Rights and Responsibilities Policy to produce their campus ID card upon request by a campus official.

What should I do if there is a fight/disturbance going on?
Contact Campus Security by calling 905.721.8668 ext. 2400 or 905.721.3211. Security will be dispatched and contact the appropriate emergency services if required. If safe to do so, use your authority as faculty or a staff member to attempt to verbally intervene. Please note: Faculty and staff are not expected to place themselves in an unsafe situation.

What should I do if there is a suspicious person in residence or on campus?
For Residence please contact the Residence Manager on Duty at 905.728.8700 ext. 8000 (South Village) or ext. 8100 (Simcoe Village). For all other areas on campus contact Campus Security at 905.721.8668 ext. 2400 or 905.721.3211. Security will be dispatched and contact the appropriate emergency services if required. If safe to do so, try to obtain a description of the suspicious person.

How do I report threats of stalking or interpersonal or sexual violence?
Please contact Campus Security at 905.721.8668 ext. 2400 or 905.721.3211 and they will take the appropriate steps. Get assistance from someone you trust and with whom you feel comfortable.. Students and staff are encouraged to speak with security and/or members of the Office of Campus Safety to develop personal safety plans to mitigate risk.

What should I do in case of a fire?
Activate the nearest "Pull Station," located near every exit. If you smell smoke, close all windows and doors and exit the building from the nearest safe exit. Contact Security at 905.721.8668 ext. 2400 or 905.721.3211. Assist persons with disabilities to the designated safety zones as required.

Are guidelines in place for emergencies?
Absolutely. UOIT has a Personal Preparedness Guide as well as Emergency Preparedness Plan and Campus Emergency Procedures in place that outline what students should do in emergency situations. Emergency Guideline posters are posted around campus so students are aware of what they should do. An Emergency Management Response Team (EMRT) is in place, with the authority to respond to, manage, control and investigate all aspects of incidents and emergencies.

Where’s the lost and found?
A lost and found bin is located at the Security desk in the Gordon Willey building at the north Oshawa campus location. To retrieve a lost item you must be able to clearly identify it. At the end of each term, any unclaimed items will be given to a local charity. Each downtown UOIT location (61 Charles Street, 55 Bond Street, and 11 Simcoe Street North) has a lost and found bin at its respective security desk.

Can I leave a package for a student, staff or faculty member at Security?
No. Security is not equipped to hold or track packages. All packages should be left with applicable faculties or offices.

What should I do if I am locked out of my office?
Contact the Campus Security Desk at 905.721.8668 ext. 2400 or 905.721.3211. Please have your campus ID card ready to provide proof of employment, in order to gain access to a room. For downtown UOIT locations, contact the Security Desk for 61 Charles Street at ext. 5616, 55 Bond Street at ext. 5800, and 11 Simcoe Street North at ext. 3239.

What should I do if my classroom is locked and I have a class scheduled?
Contact the Campus Security at 905.721.8668 ext. 2400 or 905.721.3211 and a security guard will provide access. Please ensure you have campus ID ready to show the security guard.

What should I do if there is a loud party in residence and I am trying to sleep/study?
Contact the residence main desk at 905.728.8700; South Village front desk at ext. 8000; or Simcoe Village at ext. 8100. Residence staff may contact Security if appropriate.

Is the university open 24 hours a day?
North Oshawa campus location:

Main campus entrances are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday to Friday. The campus is closed for all statutory holidays. You can access the university during off-hours via the Gordon Willey building main entrance. A campus ID card is required to gain access. You will be required to sign in and out when using facilities during off-hours at the main security desk.

Downtown location:
Downtown UOIT locations (61 Charles Street, 55 Bond Street, and 11 Simcoe Street buildings) are open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and closed on Saturday and Sunday. After-hours access is limited to 61 Charles Street through the security desk, which is staffed 24 hours a day. A campus ID card is required to gain access. You will be required to sign in and out when using facilities during off-hours at the main security desk.

Is the campus safe?
The Office of Campus Safety makes every effort to ensure UOIT is a safe campus. However, incidents can occur anywhere, at any time. Part of the department's mission is to deter incidents through patrolling activities, CCTV and through crime prevention initiatives. We are ready to respond appropriately when an incident does occur.

Is there a paging system?
There is a paging system at UOIT. This system is only used for emergency situations.

What is the number for Campus Walk?
The Campus Walk program can be accessed by contacting the Security office at 905.721.8668 ext. 2400 or 905.721.3211.

What are the hours of the Campus Walk program?
Campus Walk hours of operation from September to the end of April:

North Oshawa campus location
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday (7 to 11 p.m.)
Wednesday and Friday (8 p.m. to midnight)

Downtown Campus (11 Simcoe Street North and 61 Charles Street)
Monday to Thursday (6:30 to 10:30 p.m.)
Campus Security will provide escorts at all other times.

Where is the Campus Safety office located? When is it open?
The Office of Campus Safety Administrative office is located in Simcoe Building, Room 1210, at the North Oshawa campus location. Our hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

How do I make a complaint against a Campus Security guard?
UOIT encourages anyone who feels they have been treated improperly by a Campus security guard to contact the Scott Bronson, Manager, Public Safety, Security and Emergency Management, as soon as possible.
