Getting ready for in-person youth safety courses

Ontario Tech University’s Continuous Learning Department is pleased to partner with Durham First Aid to offer Youth Safety Courses to ages 9 to 17.
The below information is provided to help participants get ready for their registered 2025 Youth Safety Course!

Location & parking
Our 2025 Youth Safety Courses take place at the North Oshawa campus: Ontario Tech University (2000 Simcoe Street North, Oshawa ON) at Shawenjigewining Hall.

*Drop-off/pick-up is located in the lower level. Further drop-off/pick-up details will be provided by email prior to the start of the course.
Parking
Free parking is available for ONE HOUR (from the time of entry) in the Founders Lot 2 parking lot (Campus map; Google map) each day, during drop-off and pick-up.

Need to reach your participant during the course? A contact number will be provided in the "Getting Ready for your Youth Safety Course" email communication about one (1) week prior to the registered course.

Pick-up & drop-off times
Drop-off: 8:15 a.m.
Pick-up: 4:30 p.m.*
*The pick-up time for the Stay Safe course is 2:30 p.m.
Before care and After care is not available.

Pre-camp communications
Detailed information on where to drop-off (and pick-up) your participant will be shared in a "Getting Ready for your Youth Safety Course" email communication about one (1) week prior to the registered course. Our team will contact registrants primarily by email using the parent/guardian email address(es) provided at the time of registration.
Missing course information?
Please ensure emails from summercamps@ontariotechu.ca are not redirected into your junk and/or spam email folders.
Yahoo and Rogers users especially, please check your email spam and/or junk folders on a computer or laptop as some devices (and apps) apply additional spam and junk filters.

What to bring
Participants should wear weather appropriate clothing, outerwear and comfortable, closed toed shoes. No sandals and flip-flops please!
Bring a labelled bag or backpack with:
- nut-free and banana-free snacks and lunch
- a labelled re-usable water bottle
- tissues
- a litter free lunch
Important note: We are not responsible for lost or stolen items. We do our best to make sure individuals leave with what they brought, but this is not always possible. We suggest that you label personal items and leave valuables and money at home. -
What NOT to bring
Please do not bring the following items:
- open-toed shoes, sandals or flip-flops
- scented items or sprays (all spaces are scent free)
- valuables (example: money, cameras, phones, tablets, etc.)
- over the counter and prescription medications* (see policies)
- any food with bananas or nuts, or that "may contain" bananas or nuts*
- litter (we encourage a litter free lunch where possible)
*These items may be taken away and given to the parent/guardian at the end of the day.
Participant health & wellness
2025 Youth Safety Courses are subject to Ontario Tech University policies, directives, and health and safety protocols. Instructors from Durham First Aid will provide leadership and education to participants during the registered Youth Safety Course.
*Due to the nature of the course activities, opting in to the Durham First Aid Release and Waiver during registration is mandatory. Questions specifically about the Durham First Aid Release and Waiver can be directed to info@durhamfirstaid.com for response by a Durham First Aid representative.

Participant wellness
Participants who become unwell while attending the course may be sent home.
Participants who are feeling unwell are asked to stay home.

Air quality
Concerned about air quality?
Continuous Learning monitors the Oshawa - Air Quality Health Index for outdoor activity recommendations.
While Youth Safety Courses do not include outdoor play, we encourage individuals to bring a labelled refillable water bottle to ensure adequate hydration. Refillable water stations are available upon request.

Prescribed medication(s)
REMINDER: if a camper/participant requires prescribed medication(s) during the course of their registered camp/course, parents/guardians are required to contact the Campus Health and Wellness Centre (CHWC) to make arrangements for a health care professional to administer the prescribed medication(s). An appointment prior to the camp/course may be required. Please contact the CHWC at least two weeks before the start date of the registered camp/course.
Where applicable, we ask that parents/guardians please complete PART 1: NOTICE OF PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS PLAN and PART 3: CAMPER/PARTICIPANT DETAILS, PARENT/GUARDIAN SIGNATURE of the 2025 Summer Camps MEDICATIONS PLAN AND ALLERGY ASSISTANCE FORM to advise staff of the day(s) and time(s) your camper/participant will need to visit the CHWC for their pre-arranged prescribed medication(s) plan. Please bring the completed form on the first day of each registered camp/course. A staff member will walk with your camper/participant to the CHWC on the listed day(s) and time(s).

Epi-pens, inhalers and other similar devices
Campers/participants are responsible for carrying their epi-pen, inhaler or other similar use item at all times. We suggest this be carried in a labelled belt pack. Campers/participants must show the staff member leading the course where their epi-pen, inhaler or other similar use item is located.
Where applicable, we ask that parents/guardians please complete the PART 2: EPI-PEN/INHALER/OTHER ADMINISTRATION AUTHORIZATION and PART 3: CAMPER/PARTICIPANT DETAILS, PARENT/GUARDIAN SIGNATURE of the 2025 Summer Camps MEDICATIONS PLAN AND ALLERGY ASSISTANCE FORM prior to the camp/course. Please bring the completed form on the first day of each registered camp/course.
