Ontario Tech acknowledges the lands and people of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.

We are thankful to be welcome on these lands in friendship. The lands we are situated on are covered by the Williams Treaties and are the traditional territory of the Mississaugas, a branch of the greater Anishinaabeg Nation, including Algonquin, Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi. These lands remain home to many Indigenous nations and peoples.

We acknowledge this land out of respect for the Indigenous nations who have cared for Turtle Island, also called North America, from before the arrival of settler peoples until this day. Most importantly, we acknowledge that the history of these lands has been tainted by poor treatment and a lack of friendship with the First Nations who call them home.

This history is something we are all affected by because we are all treaty people in Canada. We all have a shared history to reflect on, and each of us is affected by this history in different ways. Our past defines our present, but if we move forward as friends and allies, then it does not have to define our future.

  • Nuclear - Small Modular Reactors Engineering Design Concepts and Development Program

    This (40 Hour) comprehensive course is meticulously designed to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the engineering and design principles that form the foundations of the next generation of nuclear power reactors, the Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). 

     The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Department of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science at Ontario Tech University offers this course as part of a professional development program for people working in the nuclear industry.

     Participants will explore fundamental principles, safety methodologies, and the Defense in Depth (DID) approach. The course covers safety system categorization via IAEA's SSG-30 standards, reactor reactivity feedback effects, thermal-hydraulic design requirements, and regulatory/licensing processes. It includes specific considerations for developing the licensing basis for SMR facilities and offers a comprehensive overview of SMRs, from history to commercialization. Participants will explore distinctive features and challenges with the IAEA Regulators’ Forum. Lastly, the course delves into the Passive Safety System (PSS) concept and its classification, focusing on enhancing safety in nuclear power reactors, particularly SMRs.

     Learning Outcomes

    Upon successful completion of the course, participants will:

    • Demonstrate understanding of fundamental nuclear energy concepts, including basic nuclear theory, reactor safety, and regulatory frameworks.
    • Demonstrate understanding of engineering and design aspects involved in the next generation SMRs.
    • Understand the design attributes and features incorporated into different types of SMRs.
    • Identify and characterize issues and problems in the design of various SMRs.
    • Apply the principles and practices of defence in depth in the design of different types of SMRs.
    Understand and apply knowledge of issues associated with technology readiness, deployment, social acceptance, and commercialization of SMRs
  • Nuclear Decommissioning Technical Certificate Program

    This program provides a comprehensive understanding of nuclear decommissioning, covering key activities like safe storage, surveillance, decontamination, dismantling, and decommissioning processes. Participants will explore radiological and environmental aspects, emphasizing site characterization and the importance of historical data. The course also delves into release limits and environmental impacts and offers insights into the current status of global decommissioning projects, focusing on Canada. Participants will learn to assess the existing regulations, codes, and standards associated with decommissioning activities.

    Learning Outcomes: 

    Upon successful completion of the course, participants will:

    • Describe safe storage, surveillance, decontamination, dismantling, and decommissioning activities in the context of nuclear facilities.
    • Explain the radiological and environmental aspects integral to the decommissioning process.
