Frequently asked questions

General questions

  • Is the U-Pass available to part-time students?

Part-time students are not eligible for the U-Pass. If you have accommodations and have requested full-time fees, please email upass@ontariotechu.ca for further assistance.

  • Can I opt-out of the U-Pass fee?

The U-Pass fee is a mandatory ancillary fee for eligible, full-time students which ensures that all Ontario Tech students can access Durham Region Transit at a lower cost that would not be possible on an individual basis. Opting out of this fee is not possible.

For more information on this mandatory fee, please visit our Ancillary fees web page.

  • Is the U-Pass transferable?
The U-Pass is non-transferable and cannot be issued to a personal email address.
  • What happens if my phone loses power during my travels?
You would be required to pay for your fare if you cannot present a valid U-Pass when boarding. To avoid paying this fee, please ensure that your phone is always charged. The University has installed charging stations on campus for students to use.
  • Does the U-Pass use additional data on my phone?

Yes, the one-time initial download of the PRESTO E-Tickets app will use data on your phone. To avoid any data usage, please make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi.

Once the app has been downloaded to your device and you’ve signed in, data will no longer be required to access and display your U-Pass E-Ticket.
