Overview
TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - AQ AND ABQ COURSES
Ongoing continuous learing is an integral part of the Teaching Profession - these courses enhance and expand your knowledge, as well as advance your teaching career. These Additional Qualification courses enable teachers to add addtional teaching divisions(ABQ's) or subjects (AQ's) to your teaching certificate over the course of your career.
New Ontario BEd Grads - You are eligible to register for these courses if you meet the following:
- have completed all BEd course and practicum days prior to the AQ course start date
- have applied to OCT and received your applicant number
NEW! AQ and ABQ courses are now micro-credentials and eligible for OSAP.
What are micro-credentials?
A micro-credential is a digitally-recorded recognition of a small, specific skill. It is a portable communication tool that represents evidence of your skills for employers, educators, and peers. Micro-credentials are created with industry, so you can be assured that the skills you are learning are in demand and current.
Who is eligible for OSAP micro-credentials?
OSAP for Micro-credentials is available for eligible students taking a ministry-approved micro-credential that is less than 12 weeks. To be eligible for OSAP for Micro-credentials, a student must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a protected person; and, be a resident of Ontario.

*All AQ/ABQ courses will run online through Canvas. Courses with a live synchronous component will be held on the day/time indicated in the Schedule below. Dates and times are subject to change.

- We suggest registering early to avoid cancellation of courses due to low enrollment
- Please confirm the correct course(s) are selected on your application before submission
- Your 6 digit OCT Registration number is a required field in the application
- If you are not currently employed with a Board, you can fill that field with an N/A
- Ontario Tech U Alumni will be rebated $100 once the course is confirmed to run as scheduled
- Addtional Qualification Courses (AQ Subject) - $675
- Additional Basic Qualfication Courses (ABQ Divisional) - $725
- All Part 2 and Specialist courses require a Teaching Experience Form to be signed by your Superintendent and submitted to continuouslearning@ontariotechu.ca
- For Additional Basic Qualifications please refer to the Pre-requisite page for specific requirements
- You are responsible for ensuring that you satisfy all prerequisite requirements prior to applying/registering for AQ/ABQ courses;
- Successful completion of Part 1 and/or Part 2 respectively
- Evidence of at least one year of successful teaching experience in Ontario certified by the appropriate supervisory officer, or proof of at least one year of successful teaching experience outside Ontario certified by the appropriate supervisory officer by submitting a Certificate of Teaching Experience.
- Any course cancelled by Ontario Tech University will receive a full refund, including the $75 processing fee.
- Students who wish to withdraw from an AQ Course must complete an Drop Form and submit to: continuouslearning@ontariotechu.ca.
(Please Note - the above course Drop process is for AQ/ABQ's courses only)
Non-attendance in a course is not equivalent to withdrawal. Students who cease to attend a course but do not formally withdraw will be graded with an F on their academic record.
Refund Schedule
- 1st Friday of Course Start: Last day to drop courses and receive a 100% refund (less $75 application fee).
- 2nd Friday of Course Start: Last day to drop courses and receive a 50% refund (less $75 application fee).
- 3rd Friday of Course Start: Last day to withdraw from the term course (no refund).
