Overview

Build practical skills in crisis prevention, de-escalation, and post-crisis debriefing to support safer mental health care environments. This course prepares learners to apply crisis management techniques across a range of patient/client scenarios, with a focus on recognizing triggers, conducting risk assessments, responding effectively during crisis events, and supporting recovery and team wellbeing afterward. Through a flexible online learning experience, participants will strengthen their ability to promote safety for patients/clients, staff, and the broader interdisciplinary team.

What you'll learn

  • Identify triggers and early warning signs that may contribute to a mental health crisis.

  • Apply de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques in a variety of patient/client scenarios.
  • Develop approaches to debriefing staff and patients following a crisis event.
  • Explore the role of resilience and self-care in sustaining safe and effective practice.

This micro-credential is delivered fully online and asynchronously. Learners can access course materials and complete activities at their own pace within the specified course timeframe.

Facilitator support

This offering is supported by a facilitator who provides feedback on assessments and is available to answer questions related to course requirements. Facilitator support focuses on assessment feedback and learner inquiries regarding course expectations and completion requirements.

There are no additional materials required. 

OSAP for Micro-credentials is available for eligible students taking a ministry-approved micro-credential that is less than 12 weeks. To be eligible for OSAP for Micro-credentials, a student must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a protected person; and, be a resident of Ontario.
