Overview

This course provides a practical introduction to conducting and documenting mental status assessments (MSA) in clinical settings. Learners will develop the knowledge and skills to observe, assess, and record cognitive, emotional, and behavioral presentations during patient/client interactions.

Through case studies and simulated scenarios, learners will practice recognizing key clinical indicators, using appropriate MSA terminology, and documenting observations accurately and professionally. The course also explores factors that can influence assessment, including cultural considerations, values, and biases, to support effective clinical interventions and reduce the risk of adverse events.

Mental Status Assessment Hybrid over 6-weeks: Monday, February 15 to Monday, March 29, 2027

This micro-credential combines self-directed online learning with facilitated discussions and interactive learning activities over a six-week period. Learners are expected to actively participate in discussions, engage with course content, and complete learning activities within the specified course timeframe.

Facilitator support

This offering is supported by a facilitator who guides discussions, answers questions related to course content, facilitates learner engagement, and provides feedback on assessments. Through interactive discussions and practice-based activities, learners have opportunities to explore concepts in greater depth and apply their learning to real-world clinical situations.

Courses are tailored to support workforce development and help learners build the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to provide high-quality, patient-centred care across a variety of clinical settings.

To successfully complete the course, you must:

  • Register and make full payment for the course; and
  • Successfully complete all components of the course by the specified due date(s).

Learners will receive a digital badge for individual course completion.

Material requirements

There are no additional materials required. 

OSAP for Micro-credentials is available for eligible students taking a ministry-approved micro-credential that is less than 12 weeks. To be eligible for OSAP for Micro-credentials, a student must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a protected person; and, be a resident of Ontario.
